In this post I want to share with you my experience in the Silicon Valley thanks to the Fulbright/BEST (Business Exchange Student Training) Program.
Briefly, U.S. Ambassador Spogli launched this new student/business exchange initiative, under the umbrella of the U.S. - Italian Fulbright Commission. In October 2006, five Italian engineering/science students were selected by a bi-national panel consisting of U.S. Ambassador to Rome Ronald Spogli; Parolo Dario, Professor at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna; Mario Moretti Polegato, CEO of Geox; Beatrice Trussardi, CEO Trussardi; Matteo Arpe, CEO Capitlia; and Massimo Sarmi, CEO for Poste Italiane. Candidates were rated on the intellectual/scientific merit and marketability of their projects as well as on their communication, leadership, adaptability and English language skills.
In January 2007, the first five participants, Mr. Abramo Barbaresi, Ms. Elisabetta Capezio , Ms. Valentina Coccoli (me!!!), Ms. Micol Macellari and Mr. Emanuele Orgiu departed for a six month pilot program of study and work in the Silicon Valley of California. .
We five were based at Santa Clara University in California, where we attended business classes and worked in an internship in a Silicon Valley high-growth company. We also participated in seminars and conferences at Stanford University, University of California-Berkley, the Silicon Valley Start-Up Association and the Churchill Club forum for high-tech businesses. Moreover, thanks to SVIEC and BAIA associations, we joined several networking events where we had the chance to meet and share ideas and opinions with successful Italy-US entreepreneurs.
Now, the Ambassador Spogli is launching the second edition of the Fulbright/BEST Program and the deadline for the application is the 16th of November 2007.
