Giovanni, haven't you english at PoliTO? I know that in Genova UNI there is....but a part what you can learn in University, today you have Erasmus that is great, or like in Poli, some course like Master Nanotech, that push you versus english language... at my time a good month in England with a summer school and /or working in a pub was - but maybe still is- a good way to improve english from the field.
I think the problem is not only for English language, but also for subjects of your many field of study.
Now university professors and companies require a know-how that you never have at University.
Maybe it's possible to try to learn it by yourself, but when? The university and its exams don't leave us time to do this and so this is a bad cycle and one of the most important points to take into account by rectors and University ministers.
Claudio, I think that you have to catch all the opportunities, and La Storia nel Futuro conferences in various Universities is one of them, to look out the University doors...The internship ( stage) opportunities are another goal...this Network try to do the same job..during your free time...all this, standing our italian University situation that is probably not at the top but that give you a preparation that, being not very specialized like abroad ( i.e. US) is appreciated by some industry, that require flexible approach .
I agree with Claudio, also because it is true that it's possible to have experience in Engand and similar things, however if we spend some time in these activities he doesn't succeed in graduating in time, and from the point of view of the company it isn't a point to our favor.
good question Giovanni! I think that University could have an english professional course. I studied this language at school but during these years I lose some notions! Silicon Valeey is a great opportunity also for learn more english.
I'm attending the Laurea Specialistica here at Polito all in English language. I think it's great, because studying English only in a course it's not so useful: you really learn it when you have to: like when you go in a foreign country or when you have to do an oral exam in that language! The first time I was afraid to fail, but in the end I had no problem.
I suggest you to ask your representatives of the students to make a course in English. It's useful and you get to know a lot of people: I have a lot of foreign students (especially Chinese) in course with me.
Good suggestion Stefano to your colleagues in Bologna, I do think that more our Uni's want to compete at global level ( attracting foreign students also..) more they have to push on Courses in English....some time is also a question of Professors that have to Know it, first of all. I know that PoliTO Rector is pushing to a new generation of qualified Professors ( a little older than 40) that facilitate this upgrading...Good to push, at list in a bottom up way , from the student representatives...
Actually I get to know some representatives of the students (because I am one of them here at the Politecnico di Torino). Giovanni, I can give you some names and contacts if you need them. Just let me know.
Giovanni you can put in touch your representatives with Stefano and his colleagues...is a way to share experience, I know that is difficult to change but....to give you an idea we are working on La Storia nel Futuro Conferences in Genova Uni ( sixth cycle , starting in December 08) and I had a meeting with the Student representative that suggested a future conference young speaker from FIAT but graduated in Genoa....this means that proactivity from your student side could pay...
